Trick or treating may be right around the corner, but fans at the Giant Center were able to receive something just as good. The Hershey Bears hosted a team autograph night after their game on Sunday. Fans were able to go on the ice so they could meet and take a photo with the players, coaches, and of course, COCO the mascot. Bears left winger, Mason Mitchell says that he loves meeting with the fans because their energy helps the team succeed.
“Playing at home here is obviously amazing. We probably have the best home base in the American Hockey League and it gives you all of the courage and energy to get going throughout the game. It’s awesome to be playing at home,” Mitchell said.
The Bears were able to get out to an early lead by scoring a goal in the first minute. Their defense was able to keep the Phantoms out of the attacking zone. Goalie, Vitek Vanecek recorded 35 saves. Sovaj Beni enjoyed his first time at a Bears game, and he says that he likes the energy at the Giant Center.
“The atmosphere was fun, everyone was very electric, very energetic, and everyone was very involved with the game. I loved it. I will definitely come back,” Sovaj said.
“You really do feel it, whether it’s a fight or a hit, or something that you do with the energy that they bring, to give you that extra push is incredible. It’s awesome to be playing at home and doing that,” Mitchell said.
The Hershey Bears were able to knock off the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, 3-1, in front of a crowd of over 8000 fans. The Bears will return to the ice, at this stadium behind me, on Friday when they face against the Rochester Americans. Reporting from the Giant Center in Hershey, I’m Anthony Carter, wetown.org
